The Forum of Swiss History Schwyz was opened in 1995 and is the headquarters of the Swiss National Museum in Central Switzerland. On a site where first grain and, later, defence equipment was once stored, one of the most significant museums of cultural history in the Alpine region now stands. From the outside, the Museum is a Baroque granary and armoury dating from 1711; inside, visitors will be enchanted by its contemporary and spacious architecture. The Forum of Swiss History Schwyz is both a modern museum of history and a place to experience and encounter cultural history.
On the three upper floors, the Museum looks at the period before the emergence of the old Confederation in the Middle Ages. Precious, informative objects from all over Switzerland, and from abroad, are on display. The new media are also used effectively to convey information. The media stations offer the opportunity for interactive discussion and allow visitors to have fun while engaging more deeply with the topics covered by the exhibits.
The regularly changing exhibitions on the lower level are highly relevant for the region and for Central Switzerland. The temporary exhibitions explore and present more current issues. Visitor amenities include an attractive museum shop.
