Activity itinerary

Het Spui of Groot Spui
  • 15m
The fairytale book of Lier opens with the rusticated house Het Spui (or Groot Spui), located by itself in a relaxing and picturesque riverside setting on the edge of the city. Built on a historic discharge sluice that controls the water in the city, the well-maintained 16th-century house is the only remainder of the city’s second ramparts, which overlook beautiful green landscapes of the forest on the other bank.
voormalige Kluizekerk
  • 20m
Head to the Old Town’s centre and stop by the Former Kluizekerk, resting under the shadow of its beautiful Gothic Tower. The 13th-century church witnessed a dramatic series of political events that led to its abandonment in the 19th century but still stands the test of time as a testimony to the turbulent past.
Saint Gummarus Church
  • 20m
Then, pass by the imposing figure of St Gummarus Church, standing out vividly from quaint little buildings characterising Lier’s architecture. Erected from the 14th to 16th century, the grand church is the finest example of the flamboyant Brabantine Gothic style which was well and alive in the Flemish towns at that time.
Town hall
  • 15m
As is the case with any Belgian city, Lier Town Hall is located in the main square of the city. But instead of a bustling atmosphere and crowds, the guild building in rare Brabant Rococo style dominates the wide open space all by itself, which adds a special touch of tranquility and enchantment that embodies the essence of the city.
Gevangenenpoort
  • 15m
Then, enter the medieval city centre through the Prisoner's Gate. The Gothic portal, decorated with the statues of St. Rochus and St. Margaret, is the only one left of the 12th-century city walls that defended the city and its secluded beguinage. Interestingly, its chamber served as a prison up until the beginning of the 20th century.
Zimmer Tower
  • 20m
Just some steps away is the most emblematic icon of Lier: the Zimmer Clock. In the 20th century, the talented clockmaker Louis Zimmer, a son of Lier, created the engineering masterpiece for his beloved hometown, which not only tells the exact time but also the Metonic cycle, solar cycle, lunar cycle, and zodiac with its exquisite 13 clocks.
The Lier beguinage
  • 15m
Finally, complete the fairytale trip by indulging yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of Lier beguinage, one of the oldest in Flanders. Beguinages were medieval villages inhabited by nuns and devoted laywomen weaving lace or making embroideries for a living. Meandering around narrow cobbled streets lined by antique houses whose front doors bear names of Saints or biblical scenes will transport you to the bygone ages of Lier.
