What you can expect
Your day will start by exploring the Aposelemis Dam. The construction of the Lake and Dam was completed in 2012. It stretches as far as the eye can see and it has a staggering capacity of 23 million square metres. Also as part of the construction, the village of Sfendyli is in the way so when the Lake fills the village is getting lost and remains at the bottom of the Lake.
Nearby you will find Avdou, a rural village, a place to seek peace and quiet, healthy food, and the outdoors. Dotted around are fruit trees such as apricots, oranges, and tangerines, and the silver-grey olive groves. Even more exotic fruits such as kiwis grow here, and organic vegetable gardens thrive. There we will visit Assariotakis Olive Oil, where you will discover how the extra virgin oil is made.
Next comes Panagia Kera Kardiotissa Monastery, an Eastern Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary that is situated near the village of Kera. The monastery is surrounded by fortified walls. The main church (Katholikon) was originally built as an arch-covered single-space structure and was later expanded with two narthexes and a smaller chapel. The church features murals dating to the 14th and 15th centuries.
Along you will find Oropedio Lasithiou the plateau is famous for its white-sailed windmills, (more accurately, wind-pumps), made to a local design, that have been used since the 1920s to irrigate the land. Despite there being around 10,000 in the past, most of them have been abandoned in recent times in favour of modern diesel and electric pumps.
Right after you will visit Diktaion Andron, an ancient Minoan sacred cave. Dictaean Cave is famous in Greek mythology as the place where Amalthea, nurtured the infant Zeus with her goat's milk. The archaeology attests to the site's long use as a place of cult worship. The nurse of Zeus, who was charged by Rhea to raise the infant Zeus in secret here, to protect him from his father Cronus (Krónos) is also called the nymph Adrasteia in some contexts.
Lasinthos Eco Park is your next stop and offers numerous interactive activities and attractions. The main goal of the park is to revive techniques of Cretan traditional art. Around a scenic square, you can find spots where artisans are sharing their knowledge and skills with you. Doing so, you will watch artisans, who enjoy giving out their knowledge, manufacture traditional woven, clay pots, and much more.
Then your exploring journey to Grotte Kronio will begin. According to legend, Saturn (Kronos - from whom the cave Kronio is named) ate his children to prevent the prophecy that he would lose world dominion from his offspring. Once, when Rea was born, she banished baby Zeus across the Cave of Psychro in order not to be eaten by Saturn.
Last but not least there is Mochos Village a traditional mountain village with narrow alleys and flower-filled courtyards. Its small town square is lined with al fresco cafes and tavernas.
