What you can expect

Discover the historic and beautiful centre of the German city Leipzig, on this informative walking tour.

Leipzig's colourful past and lively present can be glimpsed everywhere in the city. Visit the busy market place with the Old Town Hall, St. Thomas‘s Church, St. Nicholas‘s Church and the Mädler Passage with its legendary restaurant, Auerbachs Keller. Each place will help you discover more about the diverse traditions, personalities and history of Leipzig.

There have been many famous individuals who have spent time in or called Leipzig home. Renowned composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Mendelssohn, and Schumann, as well as the famous German writer and philosopher Friedrich Schiller have all left their musical and artistic mark on the city of Leipzig. Even today, Leipzig's international reputation as a music-city is closely intertwined with the famous Gewandhaus Orchestra.

The great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also studied poetry in Leipzig during the late 1760s. The presence of Goethe and all of Leipzig’s artistic geniuses has turned the city into one of Germany's true cultural strongholds.

Leipzig was the starting point for the events that led to the Peaceful Revolution of 1989. You can visit the original locations of the uprising such as St Nicholas's Church as well as the once secretive headquarters of the secret police (Stasi).
