What you can expect

Lefkara
Lefkara can safely be called one of the most picturesque places in Cyprus and is a member of the European Charter – Villages of Europe The place gained wealth through lace embroidery. This developed in the 15th/16th Century, when the place was popular as a summer resort under Venetian rule and the local women were introduced to the art of embroidery by Venetian nobles.

In any case, it is reported that Leonardo da Vinci personally bought an embroidered cloth in Lefkara and donated it to the cathedral in Milan. In the 19th/20th The export of embroideries began, young men with more or less knowledge of the language travelled with suitcases filled with embroideries from their village to the cities of the Ottoman Empire, Alexandria, Smyrna and Constantinople and also reached Western Europe. Thanks to the wealth that developed, the villagers were able to build representative houses and invest in their children's education.

The art of embroidery reached its peak around 1920/30, when the manual work of Lefkaritiko embroidery could not yet be copied by industrial embroidery from the Far East. In 1986 another Lefkara embroidery was donated to the Milan Cathedral for its 600th anniversary. This embroidery craft was included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

The Lefkara embroidery is a white embroidery with white cotton thread on a cotton or linen ground; geometric repetitive zigzag patterns are often worked out with hole rosettes. The museum shows how the women of Lefkara embroidered their work together in the streets.

The embroideries are offered in many shops in the village. Since the 17th century the silversmith's trade has also established itself in Lefkara. In many shops you may have a look at this silver work and of course you can also buy it.

You´ll visit and explore a Bio-Olive-Farm in the mountains, trees with a age over 800 years and taste all products made from or with olives, such as oil, cosmetics and marmelades
