Funchal is the capital of the Madeira archipelago in Portugal. It has hills as a backdrop and is known for its port, gardens and wine cellars of Madeira. The centuries-old Cathedral of Funchal, with mixtures of Gothic and Romanesque styles, is remarkable for its carved wooden ceiling.
