We will meet Thermopylae, where the Spartan King Leonidas made his heroic final stand against the Persians in 480BC. Stretch your legs at the battle site of Thermopylae, and strike your best Spartan pose for a photo. Thermopylae, which is a location in Greece where in antiquity existed narrow coastal passage. Its name derives from its hot sulphur springs. “Hot gates” is also “the place of hot springs and cavernous entrances to Hades. Thermopylae is primarily known for the battle that took place there between the Greek forces including the Spartans and the Persian forces.

Leonidas Monument

The Memorial in Thermopylae, which was erected in 1955, by the sculptor named Vasos Falireas, is a sculptural synthesis that consists of the brass statue of Leonides with his spear and shield in the centre, while on the right and left and in a lower height we have the marble figures of the personified Taigetos, which is the highest mountain in the Peloponese and the personified Evrotas which is a river flowing through the whole district of Laconia. The figure of King Leonides was based on an ancient warrior that was found in the excavation conducted by the British Archaeological School in 1920 and was identified as King Leonides. It should be noted that the Heroon in Thermopylae was constructed and erected by funds from Greeks living in America.

The Archaeological Museum of Delphi, one of the most important in Greece, presents the history of the famous Delphic sanctuary and the most famous oracle of the ancient Greek world. Its rich collections include mainly architectural sculptures, statues and works of micro-art, dedications of the faithful to the sanctuary, which reflect its religious-political and artistic activity throughout its historical course, from the foundation of the Apollonian mosque in the 8th century. e.g. until its decline in the years of late antiquity.
Temple of Apollo (Pass by)
The ruins of the Temple of Apollo that are visible today date from the fourth century BC, and are of a peripteral Doric building. It was erected by Spintharus, Xenodoros, and Agathon on the remains of an earlier temple, dated to the sixth century BC, which had been erected on the site of a seventh-century BC construction attributed in legend to the architects Trophonios and Agamedes.
The Ancient Theater of Delphi (Pass by)
The ancient theatre at Delphi was built farther up the hill from the Temple of Apollo giving spectators a view of the entire sanctuary and the valley below. It was originally built in the fourth century BC, but was remodeled on several occasions, particularly in 160/159 B.C. at the expenses of king Eumenes II of Pergamon and, in 67 A.D., on the occasion of emperor Nero's visit.
The Tholos of Delphi (Pass by)
The tholos at the sanctuary of Athena Pronaea is a circular building that was constructed between 380 and 360 BC. It consisted of 20 Doric columns arranged with an exterior diameter of 14.76 metres, with 10 Corinthian columns in the interior. The Tholos is located approximately a half a mile from the main ruins at Delphi. Three of the Doric columns have been restored, making it the most popular site at Delphi for tourists to take photographs.
Ancient Stadium of Delphi (Pass by)
The Stadium of Delphi lies on the highest spot of the Archaeological Site of Delphi. It overlooks the sanctuary of Apollo and has a view to the Delphic landscape. It was built either within the second half of the 4th century B.C. or even after the Galatian attacks. Its measured 178 metres in length and knew several refurbishment phases. The Stadium of Delphi is the best preserved ancient stadium in Greece.

Delphi was the navel of the earth, where, according to mythology, the two eagles sent by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the centre of the world met, and for many centuries it was the spiritual and religious centre and symbol of unity of ancient Hellenism. The place where it was established and flourished the greatest religious centre of ancient times. In 1987 Delfi was awarded the title of a monument of Unesco. Today Delphi is a municipality of Greece as well as a modern town adjacent to the ancient precinct. The modern town was created after removing buildings from the sacred precinct so that the latter could be excavated. There you can explore the town and enjoy your lunch.
