In 1499, when Vasco da Gama's fleet returned to Lisbon on its first sea voyage to India, the return to the sea to catch favourable winds and the more serious state of Paulo da Gama's illness led it to approach the Azores , and disembarking on Terceira island. Paulo Gama, his brother, ended up passing away and was buried, according to Damião Góis, «in a shallow grave, on which a marble stone was placed with his name; This grave is on the porch of the sacristy of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia» (where the Angra do Heroísmo Museum currently operates). According to other authors, Vasco da Gama was deeply shaken by his brother's death, having been in Terceira for between 1 and 3 months.
