Overview

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure on the eastern side of Madeira! We start at Pináculo, where the panoramic views over Funchal and the Atlantic are breathtaking. Climbing up to Poiso, we cross dense Laurissilva forests that look like they came straight out of a fairy tale. In Ribeiro Frio, nature reveals itself to be exuberant with trails and trout farms. Continuing on, we reach Cova da Roda, where the silence and serenity of the landscape envelops us. In Santana, the famous thatched cottages enchant with their colourful colours. Fortim do Faial offers a strategic stop, with stunning views of the ocean and the jagged coastline. Heading towards Ponta de São Lourenço, we are surprised by a lunar landscape, with dramatic rock formations and the sea as far as the eye can see. To top it off, at Cristo Rei do Garajau, the imposing statue and the breathtaking views leave anyone in awe. An epic day, full of excitement and discovery!

Activity itinerary

Miradouro do Pináculo
  • 15m
  • Admission ticket included
Located in a location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with its blue depth as the undisputed protagonist, the landscape of Miradouro do Pináculo has become one of the most emblematic images of the Madeiran capital. This observatory is located in the extreme east of the municipality of Funchal, currently constituting one of the most photographed and shared points in the region on social media. The main justification for this phenomenon is, of course, the undeniable grandeur of the scenery it offers to visitors who arrive here. Located 283 metres above sea level, the Miradouro do Pináculo enjoys a perfect position to contemplate the peaceful ocean that bathes the southern coastline of the island of Madeira.
Poiso
  • 40m
With a total length of 4.09 km, it provides Travellers with an immersive experience in the mountainous landscape of the south coast of the island of Madeira.
Santana
  • 1h 30m
The “little houses of Santana” have become icons widely known nationally (and beyond) for the peculiar beauty of their architectural style. With a triangular shape and covered in thatch, they are the greatest symbol of this municipality on the north coast of the island of Madeira. In fact, these typical houses are a reflection of the isolation of this location, which for a long time was difficult to access by land and sea. The preservation of unique cultural traits, as a result of this contingency, has become a heritage of enormous value for this municipality, which currently has around 8800 inhabitants.
Fortim do Faial
  • 20m
The Miradouro do Forte do Faial – Fortim do Faial, built in the 18th century, has been a Monument of Local Value since 1996 and is now a viewpoint with fantastic views over the parish of Faial, Ponta de São Lourenço and Ponta dos Cléridos.
Balcoes de Ribeiro Frio
  • 1h 20m
  • Admission ticket included
Vereda dos Balcões is a small trail, 1.5 km long (+ 1.5 km return), which takes you to enjoy the views from Miradouro dos Balcões. Starting on Estrada Regional no. 103, in Ribeiro Frio, this easy trail, with an estimated duration of 1h30, follows the Levada da Serra do Faial. On the route along Vereda dos Balcões you will have the opportunity to come across Madeira's indigenous and endemic species, which offer different shades of green to the Laurissilva forest. During the walk, pay attention to the tree species of the Lauraceae family and the exotic species that are distributed along the trail's banks.
Miradouro do guindaste
  • 20m
ocated on one of the slopes of the mouth of Ribeira do Faial, in the municipality of Santana, the Guindaste viewpoint offers a stunning view over the coastal line of the north coast of Madeira. It is the ideal place to admire the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean that bathes the island.
Ponta de Sao Lourenco
  • 25m
Ponta de São Lourenço is the long peninsula that forms the eastern tip of the island of Madeira, east of the town of Caniçal. It ends at Farol Island.
Miradouro do Cristo Rei do Garajau
  • 20m
  • Admission ticket included
The Cristo Rei Viewpoint owes its name to the statue erected here to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is an imposing sculpture of Jesus Christ, with open arms, facing the ocean. It was financed and ordered to be built by councilor Aires de Ornelas, son of the last morgado of Caniço.
