Know before you book

  • Entrance is free for anyone under the age of 18 years old. Citizens and permanent residents from the European Union can visit for free if they are aged between 18 and 25 years old (an ID is necessary).

What you can expect

Follow the steps of Napoleon III with a visit of Pierrefonds castle. It's time to explore on the southeast edge of the Forest of Compiègne the XVe century fortress built by one of the most famous French architect, Viollet-le-Duc.

Perfect evocation of a medieval defence system, discover the numerous painted and sculpted decoration of this fortified castle erected two hours driving away from Paris.

Symbol of the royal power, Pierrefonds was initially built as an advantage to take control of trade between Flanders and Burgundy. It became a museum in 1867, as the project of Viollet-le-Duc to turn it as an imperial residence had never been completed. Enjoy your visit to the monument, famous for the "Recumbent Statues Bal" scenography. This place invite to a magical walk in the tunnels of the monument. Start your discovery in the park to admire the eight towers, go the courtyard for a lesson in architecture, and pass by the chapel for a look of Viollet-le-Duc gallery. Your steps will then take you to the keep, the location of the noble living quarters and last retreat in the event of a siege, or the staterooms and the cabinet d'armes to have a look on Napoleon III personal collection. Come for a time travel in the Middle Age and discover this hidden castle, also used as the setting of a few films!
