What you can expect

The itinerary is 8 hours long and includes a visit to Parmigiano Reggiano and Balsamic Vinegar production. You will also get to enjoy lunch on a local farm.

Our first stop will be at the Parmigiano Reggiano dairy farm, where we will witness the production process and have a guided tasting of the famous cheese.

Our second stop will be at an “Acetaia” where you will learn about the production process of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar and enjoy a guided tasting.

We'll visit an organic farm in the Apennines, enjoy a farm-to-table lunch with locally sourced ingredients. Stroll with the farm's owner, meet free-range animals, and savour the stunning view of the Apennines. Lunch is a stuffed ravioli main dish and a starter of cured meats with cheeses or grilled meat. Vegetarian option available. Meal includes water, coffee, and a glass of local wine.

In the afternoon, you can choose between a visit to the castle or a breathtaking hike, short or long, to complete your off-the-beaten-track experience.

Afternoon’s options:
After finishing your lunch, there are several options available to enhance your local experience. If you have a fondness for history, you may want to visit a Middle Ages site. Alternatively, if you prefer outdoor activities, you can opt for a short hike to explore the pristine nature surrounding the area.

Short hike on the Pietra di Bismantova:
The Pietra di Bismantova is a unique megalithic rock formation from the Ice Age that was mentioned by Dante Alighieri. From its peak, you can enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of the Apennines mountain range and the surrounding valleys. As some parts of the walk involve walking on rocks, it is recommended to wear enclosed shoes with a good grip and to follow your guide for safety.

Visit Canossa’s Castle:
Explore the extraordinary life of Matilde di Canossa, a remarkable female leader from the Middle Ages, who is still revered as a beloved historical figure among the people of Reggio Emilia. In this itinerary, you will visit one of the ancestral castles of her family, constructed on sandstone, which provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys.

Medium-level hike on the Golden Path:
Enjoy a 5 km hike for stunning views of Secchia Valley and Cusna Peak (2100 m). Follow the “Golden Path” built during Queen Matilde’s era, linking Carpineti Castle to the ancient Pieve di San Vitale church. Wear enclosed shoes with a good grip for the medium-high difficulty hike. Some parts are exposed, so follow your guide for safety.
