Kid Around in Kuala Lumpur during the Lantern Festival

Great for: Family holidays, Festivals, Short trip from Singapore, Culture

Mid-Autumn Festival in KLCharlotte90T  CC by 2.0

A weekend getaway in Kuala Lumpur offers even the most seasoned traveller new experiences. The city has a variety of activities on hand. Gaze up at the Petronas Twin Towers – once the tallest buildings in the world, they still dominate the city’s skyline.

Get your adrenaline buzz at Sunway Lagoon. It not only has an amusement and water park, but also an extreme park, scream park and petting zoo. For a quieter and more educational option, try the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Tropical birds fly freely around visitors as they snap photos. It’s also a nice nature walk after taking in the steely architectural sights.

Try to schedule your visit for late September, when the Mid-Autumn Festival takes place. It’s a historically Chinese celebration of the overthrow of Mongolian rulers. Legend has it that rebel leaders delivered thousands of moon cakes to people throughout the city, and each cake contained a message regarding the time and date of the uprising.

Tourists can munch on both traditional and new-flavoured moon cakes throughout the month, and children parade through the streets with beautiful, glowing paper lanterns on the night of the festival. A feast for both the eyes and your stomach!

China’s largest and most populated metropolis will offer no end of stimulation. It’s a city of extremes with modern skyscrapers and traditional temples, rambunctious city streets and relaxing tea houses. Boat tours on the Huangpu River give visitors the best views of the downtown zone called the Bund. Another option is Zhujiajiao Water Town, an easy excursion with more picturesque bridges and temples.

To help you take it all in, visit in September during the Shanghai Tourism Festival, which offers an overview of Chinese culture. The celebration opens with a parade of floats and cultural performances from around the world. Competition is the name of the game, with winners in areas ranging from photography and hip-hop performance to the production of typical steamed buns.

Try your hand at traditional folk games in the Jiuzi Folk Game Competition. The end of the month closes the festivities with the unique International Music Fireworks Festival. The combination of fireworks displays set to music is stunning.

Enjoy the Indian Summer in Minneapolis, USA

Great for: Outdoor Enthusiasts, History Buffs, Active travel, Food

Minneapolis Walker Art Center

Imagine the autumnal colours: gold, burnt orange and deep scarlet. Crunch through leaves as you enjoy a hot apple cider in one of the Twin Cities’ lakeside parks. This Midwestern city has been ranked as one of the most active American cities. With its miles of bike paths and hundreds of lakes, it’s easy to understand why. If two-wheels aren’t your thing, how about some paddling? Rent a canoe or a stand-up paddleboard at Lake Calhoun.

Many museums offer a history of the area, such as the experiential Fort Snelling StatePark. Visitors can see how both blacksmiths and doctors worked on the frontier. Native American history is addressed as you walk through the prairies. There’s also the Mill City Museum near the scenic Stone Arch Bridge, which provides visitors with an understanding of America’s development of the west.

More studious types could enjoy a trek across the University of Minnesota campus. The architectural mastermind Frank Gehry designed one of the museums there. A run through the quad and along the mighty Mississippi will work up your appetite for the delicious fare. The city is known for its mix of both ethnic and local cuisine.
