Go between the religious pilgrimage sites and scenic resorts gracing the salty basin in the lowest landscape in the world.

Overlooking the Dead Sea, the town of Sweimeh is packed with deluxe hotels and sprawling beaches. Its surroundings have many historic spots of great religious importance. Stay at a resort in the heart of the town or along the salty shores of the water, actually a lake.

As you approach the Dead Sea region, notice the roads’ continued descent to the salty basin, the lowest terrain on Earth. The site is popular among those with skin ailments, as the mineral-rich mud is said to have curative properties.

Admire the town’s mosque and try Middle Eastern food in small cafés. Make your way to the beaches expanding from the southwestern part of the municipality. Many sections of beach are private and belong to the deluxe hotels lining the sea. Arrive at the public Amman Beach, dressed modestly, to join others swimming in the sparkling Dead Sea.

Wade into the water, which is so salty that you can easily float on its surface. For an unusual and unforgettable experience, lie on your back on the water while reading a book or waving at friends on the beach. The sea contains no plants or fish and is generally quite warm, especially during the summer.

Back on the shore, check out the luxurious King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center and browse the stores and restaurants in the adjacent Samarah Mall.

For a change, travel to nearby Mount Nebo, where it is said Moses first saw the Promised Land. Discover the caves and churches near the Baptismal Site of Jesus Christ and study the 6th-century mosaics in Madaba.

Find the town in the Balqa Governorate, in the northwestern part of Jordan. Drive west from Amman for about 30 miles (50 kilometers) to arrive here in about 45 minutes. Fly into the Queen Alia International Airport, south of Amman, and drive to the city directly in less than 1 hour.

Sweimeh blends historical religious attractions with a picturesque coastline along the Dead Sea.
