Explore scenic hiking and cycling trails along the Danube and sample some of Austria’s finest wines at this picturesque winemaking region, home of riesling.

Weissenkirchen in der Wachau is a quaint Austrian village nestled beside the Danube River in between rolling, green hills covered in vineyards and dense forest. The town is named after its white church, which provided both protection and a place of worship for the villagers in medieval times. The picturesque Wachau Valley has been a winemakers’ paradise for over 2,000 years and Weissenkirchen in der Wachau is the perfect destination to experience this tradition.

The 14th-century Gothic church has become an icon of the village since its fortifications protected the region from invaders in the 16th century. Visit the church to admire its Gothic and Baroque styling and artworks. Stop by the Wachaumuseum in the heritage Teisenhoferhof building to learn about the region’s winemaking history and the cultures that have developed around it. This building also hosts exhibitions and performances throughout the year.

Sample some of the region’s finest vintages at a Heuriger, a traditional Austrian wine tavern. The riesling grape variety originated in this part of the Wachau, so speak with your vintner about traditional tasting notes and learn about the wine’s history. Enquire with local wineries and vineyards about special tours so you can see the entire process from grape to glass.

Explore Weissenkirchen in der Wachau’s beautiful surroundings on hiking and cycling trails that run along the Danube. Book a boat tour or ride the historic ferry that runs between Weissenkirchen and St. Lorenz on the river’s opposite bank. Discover the area’s stunning scenery from the Danube or go for a swim in the clear Wachau Valley waters.

Weissenkirchen in der Wachau is located in the Krems-Land district of Lower Austria. Reach the village by car or catch a regional train to Krems and then a local bus for approximately 25 minutes to Weissenkirchen. Weissenkirchen is a picturesque village year-round, with green countryside throughout the warmer months, a magnificently colourful autumn and pristine snowfall in winter.
