Navigate waterways, venture into a limestone canyon and explore an underground cave complex when you stop at this coastal town in northwest Tasmania.

With beaches, parks, playgrounds, coastal paths and a big water slide, there are lots of ways to have fun in Ulverstone. The seaside town sits at the mouth of the Leven River, an attractive spot amid gorgeous scenery. Wind down on fabulous beaches, go wildlife spotting and examine the curious rock formations of an underground cave.

Find a welcoming spot on the sand at one of the beaches to the east and west of the town. Cool off with a swim and ride the waves on a surfboard. One of the most popular summer activities at Ulverstone is to swoop down the waterslide. The long fiberglass tube is approximately 60 metres (196.8 feet) in length and is situated on Beach Road. Explore the coastal scenery by taking the cycle ways or walking paths that pass through the waterfront area and nearby parklands.

Travel a little farther afield to explore more of the town’s natural surroundings. Drive 42 kilometres (26 miles) inland to reach the Leven Canyon, a 275-metre (902.2-feet) deep limestone gulch. Navigate the downhill track to the canyon floor. Go wildlife spotting in the canyon area for animals such as the Tasmanian devil, wedge-tailed eagle and eastern barred bandicoot. Study more animals at Lillico Beach, where penguins can be seen walking across the sand at night.

Take a guided tour of part of the Gunns Plains Cave, a complex of caves, underground streams and sinkholes beneath the Tasmanian countryside. See stalactite and stalagmite formations and a display of glow-worms.

When you are back in the town, tour more of its sights and attractions. Browse the craft shops, cafés, galleries and antique stores. Book a cruise on the Leven River, which can include a picnic on the riverbank. There are several trips available, from 1 hour to a full day.

Ulverstone is a 15-minute drive west of Devonport, the home of the Spirit of Tasmania ferry to Melbourne.
