Tuscaloosa River Walk

Take a stroll along the banks of the Black Warrior River where you’ll find picnic areas, a farmers’ market, museums and concert venues.

The Riverwalk Tuscaloosa is a 2-mile (3-kilometre) walkway that runs along the south banks of the picturesque Black Warrior River and through leafy parks. Loved by walkers, joggers and cyclists for its scenic setting, it is also home to some interesting Tuscaloosa attractions. Visit museums, shop at a farmers’ market, enjoy live music events or relax with a picnic on the grass verges.

A good place to start is at the Park at Manderson Landing, which sits at the eastern end of the walkway and is just minutes from the University of Alabama. This 8-acre (3-hectare) park boasts waterfront walking trails and excellent river views, from where you can often watch rowing boats and regattas. The park also hosts free theatre performances, including interpretations of Shakespearian plays.

Follow the riverwalk west until you reach the River Market. Here the Tuscaloosa Farmers’ Market presents the chance to sample and purchase local produce, such as farm-raised shrimp and artisanal cheeses. The market opens every Saturday and on Tuesdays. Go to the tree-shaded Queen City Park, where the Transportation Museum has artifacts relating to Tuscaloosa’s history. The museum also hosts a drive-in cinema, with movies screened on 45-foot (14-metre) screen.

Follow the walkway as it winds through a forested park before finishing at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheatre. Check the amphitheatre’s listings for concerts by well-known blues, country, pop and rock artists. Alternatively, take advantage of the riverside park benches and picnic areas.

If visiting Tuscaloosa during the holidays then don’t miss the Tinsel Trail. Over 100 illuminated and decorated Christmas trees line the walkway. Around the same time, an ice-skating rink opens at the River Market as part of the Holidays on the River festival, which includes theatrical performances and carol singing.

The Riverwalk Tuscaloosa is a short walk from both downtown Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama campus. You’ll find ample free parking spaces at the Park at Manderson Landing. Some areas have a 1-hour parking limit. There are also parking lots at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheatre. Spaces at the amphitheatre fill up fast on the day of an event.
