Trencin featuring a city and a sunset
Multiple eras of Slovakian history are on show in the charming city of Trencin, where stunning architecture reflects the fascinating story of the nation.

Encounter beautifully preserved monuments, old-world streets and stunning scenery in Trencin. Western Slovakia’s historical highlight features an iconic castle, colorful architecture and natural springs in the hills. Visit to appreciate its history and to enjoy the region’s friendly and welcoming culture.

Learn about the history of the city in the Trencin Museum. A carving in the rocks beneath the castle hints at the Roman outpost that was based here, known then as Laugaricio. The earliest written documents about the city are from the early 11th century. The city became a free royal town in 1412.

The landmark of Trencin Castle dominates the city’s skyline. Make this medieval fortress your first stop when exploring the city. This unmissable landmark displays architectural details from different eras of history. A stone tower from the 11th century stands alongside a palace from the early 1300s.

Stroll around the historic center beneath the castle to appreciate Trencin’s fairy tale-like appearance. The elegant, yellow Roman Catholic Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary was built in 1324. Admire the colorful façades of the long Mierove Square and explore the museum hosted in the City Executioner’s House.

Unwind in the waters of Trencianske Teplice spa, where hot mineral springs bubble out of the mountainous scenery. Visitors have been seeking out the healing properties of the springs here since the 13th century and today it promises massages, swimming and pampering. Relax in Turkish-style rooms or swim outdoors with panoramic views of the landscape.

Party with the locals at Pohoda Festival, a massive open-air event in Slovakia, which welcomes big names in world music every July. For a quieter musical event, take a seat at the Piarist Church of St. Francis Xaversky, an elegant Baroque building that hosts classical music concerts throughout summer.

Travel to Trencin by train from cities around Slovakia. The nearest airport to Trencin is Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport in Bratislava. Once in Trencin, the city center is easy to explore on foot. It’s possible to visit at any time of the year, though choose May, June or September for the best weather and fewer crowds at the attractions.
