It’s hard to know what is more spectacular when you visit Togo Chasm, the gorgeous sandy oasis at the end of the trail or the stunning walk down to it. Pass through one of the world’s most spectacular exposed coral fields.
With the distant sound of breaking waves playing in your ears, begin the gentle downward descent toward the coast. The path to the sandy chasm involves a shaded half-hour wander through a valley of ferns and lightly swaying trees. Although seemingly normal, a fascinating feature lies in the soil where the roots of plants grow through a foundation of fossilised coral that has been slowly decaying for years.
When you leave the forest you will be immediately confronted with the spectacular sight of a vast field of exposed, dagger-like coral towers. This is one of the only places on earth where such a phenomenon occurs on this scale. The dark grey structures contrast dramatically with the bright blue ocean beyond. Marvel at the many different shapes of the coral towers and imagine these fossils when they would have been covered by ocean and surrounded by tropical fish.
Continue along the path that winds through this strange outer space-like environment until you reach a small stepladder that leads down to a secluded "beach" cut off from the sea. At the end of your expedition, dig your toes into the soft sand and marvel at this gorgeous haven that lies seemingly undiscovered. Take a break in the shade of scattered palms and enjoy a nap in complete peace before you begin your trip back.
Togo Chasm is accessed by a path that begins just north of Hakupu on the southeastern side of the island. Wear shoes rather than sandals for the walk and bring a bottle of water. Togo Chasm and the adjoining trail are open to visitors at all times.
