Enjoy a green escape amid the lawns, trees, statues, fountains and ornamental flowerbeds of Tivoli Park. This is the biggest park in the city, popular for its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere and sporting facilities.
Stroll along paths lined with chestnut trees. Walk down the Jakopič Promenade toward Tivoli Castle, a 17th-century mansion. Tour the 18th-century Cekin Mansion, which houses the NationalMuseum of Contemporary History. One of its permanent exhibitions fills eight halls with artifacts and displays that focus on Slovenian life, work and events over the last century.
Stay in shape at one of the park’s exercise stations. Follow scenic paths on a bike rented from the park’s bike station. It is part of the Bicikelj bike share system, which has more than 30 bike stations around the city.
The park is also home to Tivoli Sports Park, which features two indoor arenas for sports and concerts. Over the years, these arenas have hosted numerous international sporting events. There is also a recreation center. Make use of its bowling lanes, three swimming pools, two roller-skating rinks, ice-skating rink and outdoor clay tennis courts. After your sporting exertions, relax tired muscles and joints in a sauna or have a picnic on the lawns.
Continue your walk through the extensive grounds and investigate the statues and sculptures. These include a full-length figure of Boy with a Whistle and a large installation made of folded bright red metal panels that are illuminated at night. This work of art by Rok Grdisa doubles as an information pavilion, providing details of art installations and museum exhibitions in Tivoli Park for visitors walking under its panels.
Go to the western edge of the park for the botanical garden and the carnivorous and tropical plants in its glasshouse. Next to the garden is a fishpond, which was built in 1880. Nearby is a children's playground.
Located close in the city center, Tivoli Park is easy to get to by public transportation. Alternatively, drive and park for a fee in one of Tivoli Park's two large outdoor lots.
