Discover the beauty, opulence and creativity, and learn about the long history, of this prominent residence in the heart of Sopron.

Storno House is one of the grandest and most beautiful buildings in the historic town of Sopron. It stands proudly on the main square. This large Baroque building is now home to the Storno Collection of antiquities and art. Visit this palace-like residence to appreciate its opulent architecture, décor and museum pieces.

Occupying a whole corner, Storno House is unmistakable in its grandeur. It was the 15th-century residence of Miklós Haberleiter and his family, who hosted King Matthias in the winter of 1482-83 while he was in the midst of attacking Vienna. It passed to the Sárkány family in the 17th century, and later to Ferenc Storno. Browse the exhibition and you will see a collection of artworks that once belonged to him and his family.

The story of Ferenc Storno is fascinating. A chimney sweep by profession, he became one of the city’s most acclaimed artists and restorers. Find the collection of his and his sons’ works on the second floor, where an exhibition displays the best pieces as part of the Storno Museum archive.

Seek out, too, the Boundless Story exhibition, which depicts local history. It gives great insight into life during the 19th century as well as offering further background to the residence. There is an impressive collection of medieval weaponry here, as well as an array of curiosities from the town hall. Check out the piano, once played by the famous composer Franz Liszt when he held a concert here in the 19th century.

Also of interest are the many furnishings and adornments dating back to the late 19th century. Notice the door frames made from pews taken from a 15th-century church in Sopron, as well as the leather chairs embellished with images of dragons and the devil.

Storno House is located on the corner of the main square. Visit the house Tuesdays to Sundays. There is a fee to enter, with several concessions available. Alternatively, buy a Museum Pass to gain discounts to the Storno Museum and several of the city’s top cultural attractions.
