St. Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral

Inspect the fascinating Celtic and medieval carvings that decorate the interior of this Anglican church and attend a choir service.

St. Patrick’s Anglican Cathedral is the heart of the Church of Ireland, an important structure on a hill in Armagh. It is the counterpart to nearby St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, with whom it shares cordial relationships.

Walk around the cathedral gardens and enjoy the serene ambiance on a sunny day. Gaze up at the belfry, which contains eight bells. A church was first built on this site in the 5th century. Note the dedication of parishioners in rebuilding the church more than a dozen times after damage from natural and human causes.

Enter the church and note the sculptures lining the interior walls. Near the entrance are a Roubiliac statue and an 11th-century Celtic cross. Relax on a wooden pew and gaze up at the stained-glass windows. These windows depict Biblical events such as the birth, baptism, transfiguration, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Walk along the red carpet of the Chapter Room. On the western side of the nave, admire the sculptures portraying archbishops. The eastern end has copies of the traditional Book of Kells and the Book of Armagh. Attend the Centre for Celtic Spirituality for its regular talks on religious history. Bring your kids to an art workshop.

While in the area, tour No. 5 Vicars’ Hill, a residential building from 1772. Stroll through its octagonal rooms, which held cathedral records. It is now a museum with ancient coins, jewelry and religious relics. Nearby is the Armagh Public library, one of Ireland’s oldest libraries. Browse its manuscripts, maps and extensive book collection. Archbishop Robinson built Armagh Public Library in 1771.

Visit St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral on any day between morning and late afternoon. There is an entrance fee, with concessions for students and families. Kids enter for free. Organize a group tour with the cathedral steward and pay a fee per person. You can also take a virtual tour of the site’s interior, via the cathedral’s official website, before your visit.

St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral is in the center of the city. Nearby attractions include a large shopping district to the east and the Market Place Theatre Arts Centre. The church is part of the Robinson Trail, which highlights city attractions.
