Built in the 1750s, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church is a historic religious institute from the colonial period with a clock and ringing bells. It is recognizable by its tall steeple with an elegant balcony, which has had several uses over the centuries. Capture photos of the white façade with four imposing Tuscan columns and an elegant pediment.
The bell tower with its small clock face rises above the surrounding buildings, reaching a height of 186 feet (57 meters). Find out how it doubled as a navigational landmark for ships and a lookout tower during several wars until the late 19th century. Climb to the tower’s balcony for a panoramic view of downtown Charleston, its harbor and the ocean.
Enter the church to see its charming 18th-century English design. Note the cedar box pews, which were used by George Washington in 1791. The interior contains magnificent stained-glass windows. Wander through the cemetery, which is decorated with flowers.
Listen to the historic ringing of the eight bells, including a large tenor bell. The British stole the church bells as they retreated following the Revolutionary War. The bells were eventually recovered from London, but damaged in storage during the Civil War. They were recast in the original British foundry many years later and now chime proudly from the church. The beautiful organ has been in place since 1767.
Along with the post office, the courthouse and the city hall building, the church is part of the Four Corners of the Law in Charleston. Note that the church is open to sightseers Monday through Friday from morning until late afternoon. It closes at noon on Saturdays and opens for worship on Sundays.
Standing on the southwestern corner of Washington Square, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church marks the center of Charleston. Many bus routes lead to the stops surrounding the church.
