Medieval legend says that removing one stone from this 600-year-old cathedral could cause its collapse. Visit Slovakia’s largest church to discover this legend and even more extraordinary facts.

St. Elisabeth Cathedral (Dóm svätej Alžbety) is one of Slovakia’s most monumental religious landmarks. Visit this ancient church to appreciate its striking façade, browse exquisite frescoes, see tombs and enjoy sweeping city views. Construction of St. Elisabeth Cathedral began around 1380 and continued until 1508. It is widely considered as Europe’s easternmost Gothic-style cathedral.

The imposing exterior features multiple spires, pilasters, reliefs and tall, narrow windows. Decorating the northern doorway is an intricate relief of the Last Judgement and sculptures of the 12 apostles. Note a gargoyle on the southwest wall, which supposedly depicts the alcoholic wife of the church’s architect.

Legend states that there’s one hollow stone set in the walls and that the cathedral would collapse if it is removed. Another folkloric story is that the building’s circumference is equal to the length of the city’s former defensive walls.

The inside has a Latin cross layout with huge arches and a vaulted ceiling. There are frescoes by a local 15th-century artist called Stefan and a Gothic double spiral staircase, thought to be one of the oldest in Europe. Marvel at the collection of 48 paintings at the Altar of St. Elisabeth, which portray themes such as the Advent and the Passion of Christ. Don’t miss the vault and sarcophagi of Francis II Rákóczi, who headed a rebellion against the Habsburgs.

Climb to the observation deck of the 197-feet (60-meter) tall Northern Tower for panoramic views of the Old Town. Spot major city landmarks while gazing along Hlavná Ulica, Košice’s majestic central promenade. During the climb you’ll be able to see the mechanisms of a clock and the bells of the cathedral’s carillon.

The cathedral stands at the heart of Hlavná Ulica. Košice train station is about a 10-minute walk to the east. Nearby city attractions include the Lower Gate underground museum, Singing Clock and State Theatre. Pavement cafés located on Hlavná Ulica afford wonderful views of the city’s architecture.

St. Elisabeth Cathedral is open daily and admission is free. A nominal fee is applicable to climb the tower.
