Skovde is located in the middle of southern Sweden, between Stockholm and Gothenburg in the county of Vastergotland. Skovde became a city as early as in the 15th century. However, in 1759 the town was struck by a large fire and the only remaining building from the time before the fire is Helénstugan, which opens to the public on certain days. During the 19th century Skovde became a popular spa town, and still today there are many places to bathe in the town.
By the lake Simsjon you can swim and play minigolf, and just north east of the lake you find Skovde Golf Club. In winter Simsjon is good for ice fishing, and a short drive away you can try cross country skiing in hilly Billingen. There are several tracks ranging between a few and around ten kilometres in length. From central Skovde the drive to Billingen or Simsjon takes around ten to fifteen minutes.
See arts exhibitions, hear a concert or go to the cinema at Skovde Kulturhus, which was one of Sweden's first cultural centres when it opened in 1964. At Arena Skovde you find an adventure pool, a relaxation area and a swimming pool to do laps in. If you prefer watching to doing sports you can see for example hand ball tournaments here sometimes.
Go shopping around the streets in central Skovde. Stroll around the streets in Skovde City and the shopping centre Commerce, where you also find a range of restaurants to relax in after a hard day of shopping. Most trains between Gothenburg and Stockholm stop in Skovde, and right next to the central station you find the travel centre. From here it is only a short walk to Skovde Kulturhus, Arena Skovde and the shopping streets.
