Ski

Travel Guide

An adventure for those interested in early Norwegian history, in particular the Stone Age and the Iron Age.

Ski is a great base to experience Norwegian nature at its best and to enjoy a relaxing holiday in a quiet, small town. Don’t forget to visit the Stunner settlement, which is the oldest known settlement in Akershus. Did you know that the first meteorite discovered in Norway was found in Ski in 1848?

Ski is the largest village and the administrative centre of the Follo district in Akershus. The main occupation in Ski is trade and industry, and many residents commute to Oslo. The name Ski comes from the old word skeidi, which means a place where races are held. This is also reflected in the municipal coat of arms, depicting three horse heads.

Once in the area, you should visit the Oscarsborg Fortress, situated on the Kaholmen islands in Drøbak Sound, and experience what might be Norway’s most important fortress. Don’t forget to visit Ski Church, a stone church dating back to 1150. If you are travelling with children, the Tusenfryd theme park, situated only a stone’s throw away, is guaranteed to be a hit. Or how about ice skating in the Ski Ice Hall?

A weekend trip to Ski takes you to central Follo. Ski Station is on the Østfold Railway Line, so getting to Norway’s capital, Oslo, is very easy. It is also only a short distance to the other villages in the municipality of Ski. However, you may still enjoy renting a car to avoid waiting for public transport.

If you are travelling from the UK, it might be easiest to arrive at the airports in Gardermoen or Rygge, then hiring a car for the final stretch. Rygge Airport is situated about 40 miles from Ski and is its closest airport, but it may not have as many departures as Gardermoen Airport.

If you want a relaxing holiday with cultural history, Ski is a great option. Don't forget to end your holiday in Ski with a relaxing spa treatment at Son Spa, the perfect place to unwind and recharge your batteries.

Good budget choice for a short stay.
"This was a good choice for a 1 night stopover in Oslo. On the outskirts of the centre but walkable to the waterfront or good metro service. Not much nearby to keep you local for entertainment. Check-in was quite straightforward when we arrived but the details given beforehand weren’t that clear. ..."

"We loved this area of Oslo—so cute and close to everything. Very quiet. Our room was perfect—aside from the cot which was uncomfortable for our grandson. The bed was great.
