The Shrine of Remembrance is a classical homage to the Australian men and women who served their country in war. Visit to see an architectural marvel with imposing steps, columns and a temple-shaped roof.
Head to the shrine to soak in the peaceful and solemn atmosphere. View the remembrance stone with the biblical inscription: “Greater love hath no man” that lies at the centre of the sanctuary.
The Shrine of Remembrance is surrounded by 13 hectares (32 acres) of scenic parkland. Tourists and natives alike have been gathering at this poignant Melbourne symbol to pay their respects since 1934.
If you can, attend the ceremony on November 11 to witness the highpoint of the year. A ray of light shines through a gap in the roof to illuminate the word "love" in the inscription. If you aren’t in Melbourne at that time, however, the Ray of Light Ceremony is re-enacted daily every half an hour using electric light.
