As the closest major mountain resort to Turin, Sauze d’Oulx provides a fantastic escape from the city at any time of the year. Go in winter to enjoy some of the region’s best powder. The resort is located on the Via Lattea mountain range, which has more than 248 miles (400 kilometres) of marked pistes.
Rent skis or a snowboard in town and hit the slopes. Learn the basics from an experienced instructor during a lesson on a gentle nursery run. Ride a lift up to more challenging slopes and speed down the mountain independently. Intermediate skiers will have an array of runs available to them with 62 percent of the marked slopes graded as red.
In addition to the well-maintained slopes, off-piste options and cross-country runs can be found in the surrounding areas. Weave along winding trails and through fields surrounded by snow-covered trees.Visit during the fine summer months when the snow has melted and the pistes are transformed into mountain-biking trails. A network of picturesque walking trails lead through Alpine pastures and ancient forests.
After a day on your feet, return to the village to rest and recoup. Wander along the narrow cobbled streets and choose between the many high-quality restaurants. Eat fresh pasta and wood-fired pizza for dinner, then finish off the night with a glass of fine wine or a fruity cocktail in one of the bustling bars. The town is known for its lively après-ski scene.
To reach Sauze d’Oulx, fly into the airport in nearby Turin. From there, it’s less than a 90-minute drive west to to the town where outdoor adventures and picturesque surroundings await.
