On a commanding hilltop position overlooking Lake Maggiore is a wonderfully preserved historic stronghold that now contains original decorations, a museum and a garden.

Experience the preserved medieval character of Rocca di Angera, a remarkable relic overlooking the town of Angera on the shores of Lake Maggiore. The fortress is a distinctive landmark on the town’s skyline, having guarded the shores since the early Middle Ages. Also known as Rocca Borromeo, the fortress has transformed over the centuries from early medieval edifice to stately Borromean mansion. Learn about the powerful families that took up residence in the fortress, explore the charming Museum of Dolls and spend some time studying the plants in the reconstructed Medieval Garden.

Seen from the town below, the pale stone of the Rocca di Angera gleams in the sun. The fortress is crowned with roof of red terracotta tiles, matching the tiny houses below. Make your way into the grand fortress and admire its preserved archways and internal courtyards. The fortress belonged to a chain of powerful nobles, ending with the Borromeo family, who ruled over much of the region from the 15th century onward.

Inside, you’ll find galleries dramatically lit to highlight the internal stonework, preserved frescoes and vaulted ceilings. Explore the Hall of Justice (Sala di Giustizia), which features which an original 13th-century fresco depicting the Battle of Desio. The restored Sala delle Maioliche showcases a collection of approximately 300 artworks and relics.

Check out the Museo della Bambola (Museum of Dolls), which traces the evolution of these toys in Europe from the 18th century to the present. Examine some of the more than 1,000 dolls and toys in the museum’s collection. Get some air in the tranquil courtyard, in which the castle’s Medieval Garden has been recreated. You’ll see collections of plants that were favored for medicinal, symbolic and religious uses in the Middle Ages.

Rocca di Angera is located high above the town of Angera on the southeastern shores of Lake Maggiore. It can be reached in 20 minutes on foot from the town’s historic center. Drive to the castle in less than 5 minutes. The fortified medieval building is open daily and there is an admission fee to enter. Guided tours are available for an extra fee.
