The city’s origins date back to 1845, when Rivas was incorporated into Vaciamadrid. Both towns were destroyed during the Civil War as they were located on the front, and in 1954 the General Directorate of Devastated Regions reconstructed them as a single city. It was then that Rivas-Vaciamadrid was taken as the official name of the municipality.
Most of the municipal area is integrated into the Sureste Regional Park, a protected area spanning more than 115 square miles. The site lies in the south-east of the Madrid region, along the lower courses of the Rivers Manzanares and Jarama, and is home to the calm waters of the Campillo lagoon. On its banks, you’ll find the El Campillo Environmental Education Centre, where you can see some of the archaeological findings of the area.
Take advantage of the unbeatable offers for cheap trips to Rivas-Vaciamadrid and don’t miss the opportunity to go on a particularly special train journey. The old River Tajuña railway is now a tourist attraction that spans 2.5 miles between Arganda del Rey and Rivas-Vaciamadrid. The route passes through the town of Rivas, follows the Campillo Lagoon along the gypsum shelf and crosses a spectacular iron bridge across the River Jarama. You’ll definitely want to bring your camera along.
If you take the old train all the way to Arganda del Rey, you’ll be able to visit the Train Museum. It’s housed in what used to be the La Poveda train station, which retains all its historical charm. Inside you can see an old map of the stations, with stops marked with small light bulbs. Also on show is a collection of tools, lamps and other appliances used in the profession, as well as the desk and hat of the station master.
