This sheltered bay offers some of the best snorkelling spots on the coast, as well as a safe and family-friendly beach.

The bay in front of the Richardson Ocean Centre is home to the only black sand beach in the Hilo region. The house on this site dates back to the 1920s, and is the former residence of the Richardson family, after whom this park was named. It is now occupied by a centre dedicated to education and research, where you can learn all about the local marine life.

A natural sea wall has been formed at this site thanks to the lava flow from the Mauna Kea volcano. This shelters the beach from the swell of the open ocean, making it a perfect spot for leisurely swimming. At low tide numerous rock pools are left filled with water, in which children can play free from any worries about currents or rip tides.

Kayaking is a popular pastime along this stretch of coast, allowing you to explore the entire beach area, as well as get up close to the magnificent native Hawaiian sea turtles. If you are lucky, you may also spot a monk seal, another resident of the Hilo area. You’ll find many kayak rental operators along the beach, and charges are reasonably low.

The calm waters of the bay attract many snorkelers, so don’t forget to bring along you mask and snorkel to venture in and discover the varied marine life.

The area beyond the sea wall is known as a popular surf break. You should only head out here if you are a confident and experienced surfer, as conditions are notoriously unpredictable. Enjoy body boarding in the shallower waters as a safer alternative if in doubt.

Don’t miss a visit to the Ocean Centre itself. Elsa and George Richardson’s former home is now a marine research facility and education centre, where you’ll be able to learn all about the ocean life in this area.

The Richardson Ocean Centre is situated 9 kilometres to the east of Hilo. There are no public transport services running to the bay, although certain chartered tours will include this destination. As such, the most convenient way to reach the beach is by car, and there are plenty of free parking spaces. The beach park is open every day, and admission is free.
