Today, Punkaharju is a community in the municipality of Savonlinna, known particularly for its spectacular ridge landscape. It is one of the finest natural sites in South Savonia, with its soaring heights located between Lake Pihlajavesi and Lake Puruvesi. But, visitors do not only get to admire the scenery the Finnish Forest Museum, Lusto, and the Johanna Oras Art Manor can all be found in Punkaharju. In addition, families will find plenty of fun things to do at the Kesämaa activity park.
The continental glaciers that withdrew at the end of the Ice Age left behind the impressive Punkaharju Ridge, whose afforested landscapes were admired by visitors as early as the 19th century. Finland’s oldest accommodation, the Punkaharjun Valtionhotelli, is a charming pink-coloured wooden villa, which Tsar Nicholas I built as a house for the warden of what used to be a royal park. Emperor Alexander I had already ordered the forest on the ridge to be protected from logging, so virgin forest now grows there. The easiest way to explore the ridge is on foot, or by bike.
Follow the same routes along the Punkaharju Ridge as local hunters used centuries ago. The marked routes make it easy to explore the natural wonders, though many unmarked paths also crisscross the ridge. Hike along the Montell trail that passes through larch trees, or try the Kokonharju trail, which goes up and over the ridge. A holiday in Punkaharju is also a chance to see the trenches and dugouts from World War II, which are part of the Salpa Line defence system.
The outstanding beauty of Punkaharju can be enjoyed at any time of the year, because the view across the waters of Saimaa from the top of the ridge is dazzling, both when they are flowing freely or covered in ice. Lusto can also be visited at virtually any time. The museum’s permanent exhibition includes a collection of forestry machinery, 120 different chainsaws and objects associated with log driving. Children can also examine detailed miniature models, and try out forest-machine simulators.
There is much to do in Punkaharju all year long, but summer is the best time to explore the region. The number one destination for those planning a trip to Punkaharju with the whole family, is the water and activity park Kesämaa (Summerland), which has facilities and games for people of all ages. Don’t forget the Hepokatti Barnyard, where you can feed the sheep and goats, and gaze at the piglets roaming about. Travellers who appreciate art have a unique opportunity to watch artists at work at the Johanna Oras Art Manor.
Punkaharju is easily reached by train from Lappeenranta and Savonlinna. On the journey, travellers can enjoy the splendid lakeside views. You can easily combine your visit to Punkaharju with a city break, because Savonlinna can also be reached easily, courtesy of the quaint steamship S/S Heinävesi. Crossing the waters of Saimaa is the crowning glory of a holiday in South Savonia. You can also explore the waters around Punkaharju by taking a canoe from one island to another.
