Puerto del Carmen has come a long way from its roots as a fishing village. In recent years this tropical beach location has transformed into Lanzarote's most popular and exciting resort. Enjoy the atmosphere, explore the quaint old town or dance on the sand from midnight until dawn.
Spend mornings at the beach: find the perfect spot to read or enhance your tan. Playa Grande is the largest beach on the island and is a constant hive of people playing water sports or ball games on the sand. Rent a hammock to relax or take a lesson in windsurfing and skim across the waves.
The main promenade has a number of cafés with views of the ocean. Start your day with an espresso coffee with a hearty English breakfast.
Rent a bike and take an architectural tour of Puerto del Carmen's old town. This area, located in the east part of town, consists of a number of colonial buildings perched around a fishing harbour. Among the beautiful façades, search out a range of top-class restaurants serving Canarian seafood dishes.
After a meal, work on your long drives at the Puerto del Carmen golf course. Take a glass-bottom boat tour for an intriguing insight to the world below the waves. Bargain hunt at the Biosfera Shopping Complex, home to a selection of designer goods, duty-free electronics and local artisanal crafts.
After dinner by the sea, join party-going crowds who flock to beachfront clubs and bars. The party peaks after midnight and clubs play dance, folk and house music until dawn. You could also try your luck at the local casino.
Located on Lanzarote's eastern coast, Puerto del Carmen is a 15-minute drive from the international airport. Supermarket facilities are available as well as luxury accommodation.
Visit Puerto del Carmen at the end of February to join the infectious music and flamboyant colour of Carnival. The Nuestra Senora del Carmen festival in July features folk music concerts, which pay tribute to the island's patron saint.
