Bring your camera when you head to the top of Prospect Mountain, as the views you will see at the top are some of the best in the Lake George region. Follow the beautiful hiking trails that lead to the summit or drive up instead and save your energy for the top, where you will find more trails.
As one of Lake George’s most impressive natural landmarks, Prospect Mountain is a favorite with both tourists and locals. Head to the top of its 2,030-foot (619-meter) peak on a clear day and expect to see for about 100 miles (160 kilometers). The mountain’s popularity is not a new phenomenon for a very long time, people have come from great distances to enjoy this beautiful spot.
Look for the ruins of a cable railroad at the top of the mountain. This impressive structure was the largest cable railroad in the world between 1895 and 1903. It carried visitors up to the Prospect Mountain House, a well-loved hotel at the mountain’s summit. The hotel no longer stands here, but visitors to Lake George continue to make Prospect Mountain a key item on their itineraries.
In good weather, walking is a very enjoyable way to get to the top of the mountain. Follow the nature trail that leads up the slope. It is hard to get lost, as they are very well marked. The trail is about 4 miles (6 kilometers) long and the terrain is not too difficult. Be aware that it’s often hot here in summer so bring plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun. Factor in time to pause often to take pictures of the stunning views along the way.
Instead of walking, drive to the top of Prospect Mountain to give your legs a rest. While hiking is free, there is an admission fee for cars. The drive is every bit as scenic as the walk. Note that the mountain is open to cars only at certain times of the day and year, so check ahead for current status.
