Even among the many stunning beaches of Fuerteventura, Playa de la Barca is one of the best on the island. Splash about in the shallow waters of a tidal lagoon that covers a bar of white sand or relax beneath the warm rays of the sun in all seasons. The beach is a smaller part of the wider Sotavento Beach and is particularly popular for windsurfing and kite boarding. Watch professionals perform incredible stunts or try out a new watersport yourself.
Find a spot to sunbathe on the fine sand or go for a swim in the crystalline water. The sea is separated into areas for watersports and swimming to keep it safe. Rent a windsurfing board and try to ride the waves. Lessons are offered by nearby operators, while many professionals use the water here throughout the year to practice.
Visit at high tide at certain times of the month and you could see much of the beach covered in shallow water. This tidal lagoon is ideal for children wanting to play in the sea without the going in deeper parts.
Choose a fun mode of transport for exploring Playa de la Barca and its surrounding area. Join one of the boat rides that leaves from the beach to explore the edges of the island. Alternatively, ride a camel along the beach for an unusual way to see the landscape.
Enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Championship, which holds its qualifying rounds here every summer. Food and drink pop-up stalls provide nourishment while you watch some of the best athletes in the world competing on the waves.
The beach sits below the pleasant town of Costa Calma and is backed by mountainous Jandía Natural Park, in the far south of the island. Drive here for an hour from Fuerteventura Airport and park in town. Come to Playa de la Barca at any time of year, as it stays warm on this stretch of coastline even in winter.
