Walk through the historic centre of the town to see its old clock tower, majestic theatre and charming fountain.

The Place de la Liberté is a pedestrianized plaza in the heart of Lons-le-Saunier. It is the main hub of activity in the charming town, where tables from cafés and restaurants spill into the square. Relax with a book in this charming part of the city and watch people stroll by.

Sit at the table of a café in the pretty square and enjoy the pleasant ambiance. Watch the fountain jets rising from the floor in the plaza’s centre and children trying to avoid the water as they run through the fountain. Take a casual walk through the spacious square between trees and benches.

Inspect the statue of General Claude Lecourbe, an 18th-century war hero who served during the Napoleonic Wars and the French Revolution. A nearby street also bears his name.

Marvel at the elegant façade of the Grand Café du Théâtre and try its exquisite pastries. Capture photos of the small sculptures of lions in front of its entrance. The Tourism Office on the plaza provides information about events and activities here and around the town.

See a show at the Théâtre de Lons-le-Saunier, which occupies one side of the plaza with its elegant columns and arched windows. Gaze up at the old clock tower, which generates a quaint atmosphere in the square. The plaza grew over the centuries from its starting place as a series of ditches.

Find the Place de la Liberté in the central square in Lons-le-Saunier. It is easy to walk to the plaza from the city centre, which is relatively small. Walk north for about 5 to 10 minutes from the city’s railway station to reach the square. Nearby attractions include the Parc des Bains, the Town Hall and the House of the Laughing Cow. The plaza was recently pedestrianized and now contains an underground parking lot.
