Located in the heart of Perugia, this small square is surrounded by some of the town’s most impressive landmarks.

Relax in atmospheric Piazza IV Novembre, a square in the center of Perugia encircled by some of the city’s most famous sights. See stunning art galleries, ancient municipal buildings and towering cathedrals. The square is also lined with cafés and restaurants so you can unwind after all the sightseeing.

Stand in a square that has been a crucial part of the city since its earliest days. Both the Etruscans and the Romans viewed this area as the center of their ancient settlements. In the Middle Ages, when Perugia flourished as an independent commune, a palace and a church were built around the square, which was then known as Piazza Grande. Its name changed to Piazza IV Novembre 1918 to celebrate the day World War I ended in Italy.

Stop to admire the Fontana Maggiore, a fountain created by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano in the late 1200s. Two tiers of polygonal stone basins are decorated with detailed bas-reliefs that celebrate the civic achievements of mankind. Look for carvings that represent the disciplines of liberal arts and philosophy.

Explore Palazzo dei Priori, an expansive palace that used to host the guilds of the city. Find the bronze sculptures of a griffin and a lion, the symbols of Perugia, guarding the entrance. Examine the frescoes that adorn the Sala dei Notari and browse centuries of artwork in the National Gallery of Umbria.

Take a moment to reflect in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The impressive structure was built on the site of a 9th-century church. Step into the nave of this impressive church, which took almost two centuries to build. Look for a Gothic altarpiece designed by Signorelli.

Cafés and restaurants with outdoor seating now occupy many of the buildings around the piazza. Sip on fine Italian coffee beneath the shade of these impressive structures or seek relief from the heat with an indulgent gelato.

Ride a bus to Piazza Italia then stroll through cobbled streets for 5 minutes to reach Piazza IV Novembre. The square is pedestrianized.
