Brimming with an abundance of wildlife in unique habitats, not found in other national parks of Malaysia.

Measuring only 1,213 hectares, Penang National Park is one of the smallest national parks in the world. It makes up for its size by being home to a fascinating diversity of wildlife. Located in the North-Western coast of Penang, the dense tropical jungle of the park is home to more than 1,000 types of plants and hundreds of species of birds, reptiles and mammals, and some of the best beaches on the island.

Marked trails take hikers through the lush jungle, most of the time ending the journey on one of the park's many white-sand beaches. To see the nesting ground of green turtles (between the months of April and August), head over to the park's most popular beach, Pantai Kerachut, which also features a rare meromictic lake, a natural phenomenon where fresh water and seawater do not intermix but fresh and saltwater creatures co-exist during the wetter months of the year.

The trail towards it can be rather challenging, but boat rides are available for a more relaxing journey. Natural swimming holes and beaches throughout the park make for a refreshing break from trekking.

Accommodation is not available for those intending to spend the night but camp sites dot the park, offering shade and adequate facilities. Camping is free but you'll be required to obtain a permit from the park management.

Bird watchers will delight in the park’s offerings, where you can spot a number of regional species soaring the skies, including the celebrated Brahminy kite and the crested serpent eagle. Animal lovers should keep their eyes peeled for tree shrews, flying lemurs, and leopard cats. There are also some snakes roaming the park, and while most of them are non-poisonous, you should keep your distance if you spot any.

Penang National Park is located 22 kilometres northwest of Georgetown and 4 kilometres from Penang's touristy beach strip Batu Feringghi in Teluk Bahang. A bus ride from the city centre to the entry point takes up to an hour. Boat rides to and from the beaches are available at a fee, from the entry point. Park admission is free, but visitors are required to register upon entering, including campers. The park is open daily throughout the year.
