Scenic beauty, shallow sea, watersports and traditional Greek food attract visitors to this laid-back resort in the southern half of Rhodes.

Pefkos Beach is an easy-going beach resort that attracts a mix of young families, couples and locals. It is a place to enjoy lazy days on a long sandy expanse, well away from the bustle of the island’s larger towns and resorts. Pefkos Beach is spread around a small bay, flanked by hills and the tall pine trees that give this former fishing village its name. The Greek word “pefko” translates as “pine.”

Relax on a rented sun lounge under the shade of an umbrella, then swim in the warm water of the Aegean. The sea is shallow here and therefore popular with families with young children. There are rocky coves at one end of the beach which are also good places for a swim. If you want to get a little more active on the water, rent a paddleboat or try Jet Skiing.

To explore the diverse marine life, go snorkeling or join a diving excursion with the dive school situated on the beach. There are also lessons for beginners. Another way to experience the fascinating underwater scenery is to go on one of the glass-bottom boat trips.

When you come off the beach, find a welcoming bar, restaurant or traditional Greek taverna along the main street. Although not known as a lively resort, some of the bars host DJs and karaoke in the evenings. If you are planning to stay overnight, choose from boutique hotels and self-catering accommodation.

Rhodes has a mild climate and experiences more than 300 days of sunshine annually, meaning you can enjoy a visit to Pefkos Beach throughout the year.

The beach is about a 1-hour drive south of Rhodes City and there is free car parking at the north end. Alternatively, travel by public transport. Daily buses run between the capital city and Lindos which is approximately 2 miles (3 kilometres) away. Consider combining your beach activity with a trip to the nearby Acropolis of Lindos.
