Visit a suburb of Oslo close to the centre with a wide choice of activities.

Ullern is a lively suburb with around 32,000 inhabitants, bordering the River Lysaker just to the west of Oslo, home to shops and residential streets. It is close to the city centre, which boasts shopping and cultural attractions.

Ullern Gård was originally a large farm on the edge of Oslo, which subsequently gave its name to both a street and ultimately the suburban area. Urbanisation began in the 1800s as industry began to supersede agriculture as a main source of income on the edges of Oslo and the city reached out its fingers to enfold the area. Over time, Ullern developed into a residential area, with villas and houses for the growing middle class and, after World War II, blocks of flats began to appear as the area grew in size.

But there is more to Ullern. The local church, Ullern kirke, was designed by the well-known Norwegian architect Harald Bødtker and built in 1903 in the then-popular Romanesque style. Another favourite destination is Frognerparken, famous for its sculpture and art. If the weather permits, why not take a picnic to the park and enjoy some art while you eat? Nearby Skøyen is also a popular neighbourhood, where you can shop and enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee in one of its many cafés. Or if you are feeling particularly active, how about stretching your legs a little with a walk up the nearby hill of Ullernåsen, which stands 650 feet above sea level?

Ullern is a very varied neighbourhood with quiet residential streets and busy shops. For shopaholics, the CC Vest centre is Norway’s most popular shopping centre. You are also within easy reach of the centre of Oslo and other interesting parts of the city.

Travellers arriving from outside Norway usually land at Oslo Airport and from there, an airport train will speed you directly to Ullern in just over 30 minutes. Getting around Ullern and its surrounding area is easy by tram, bus, train or car.
