Old Town Bridge

The carved gates of this historic bridge connect the city center to Bakklandet, arcing over the river Nidelven and providing stunning city views.

Trondheim’s Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro) is an icon of the city and has linked the city to the river’s eastern banks since 1681. The current bridge, established in the 19th century, offers a picturesque spot to enjoy beautiful views of the colorful waterfront buildings and the Trondheimfjord beyond. Experience a piece of Trondheim history as you amble along the wooden walkway and take photos of the heritage riverside boathouses, Bakke Bridge, the wharves and the coursing river Nidelven.

Embark on a walking tour of historic Trondheim and approach the Old Town Bridge from the river’s western banks. A small grassy parkland introduces the historic structure. While it is regularly used as a road, heavy traffic is prohibited from passing over the bridge. A wooden footpath allows easy pedestrian access.

The bridge was first devised by Johan Caspar von Cicignon in 1681 as a military strategy. It remained a guarded city gate until 1861. The landmark bridge you see today was designed by engineer Carl Adolf Dahl and constructed in 1861. Its gated design allowed for the bridge to be raised for maritime traffic however, it has since been reinforced with concrete. As you walk across the bridge, imagine why the Norwegian composer Oskar Hoddø composed an ode to this stretch of river, calling the bridge the “Portal of Happiness.”

From the bridge, see views of the heritage riverfront, as well as Kristiansen fortress, the Gløshaugen and Øya campuses of the Norwegian University and the twin spires of Nidaros Cathedral. Snap photographs of the surrounding views before continuing on toward Bakklandet, a pretty neighborhood of Trondheim on the eastern banks of the river Nidelven. Find a selection of cafés, restaurants and boutique stores in this charming neighborhood.

The Old Town Bridge is located in central Trondheim, a short distance from the Nidaros Cathedral at the bend in the river Nidelven. It is a 15-minute walk south from the canals of the harbor and Trondheim’s main train station. Visit the Old Town Bridge any time of the day for free.
