Wander around this centuries-old castle, which is home to British colonial landmarks, a museum of Byzantine artifacts and live music events.

The Old Fortress is an impressive stronghold perched atop a rocky headland on the east side of Corfu Town. Walk around the battlements to discover historic landmarks showcasing a range of architectural styles. Visit a museum of historic Byzantine objects and enjoy impressive views over the Old Town of Corfu Town.

The history of the Old Fortress dates back to the 6th century, when the Goths forced residents of an ancient city to settle on a promontory. The Byzantines began the construction of a fortification, which was finished by the Venetians between the 1400s and 1700s. If you travel to Corfu by ferry, look for the fortress as your first and last images of the island.

Approach this grand fortress via the iron bridge that crosses a small moat. Check out the statue of Count Johann Matthias von der Schulenberg at the main entrance. He led the defence of Corfu against a Turkish siege in 1716. Admire the fortress’ grand bastions, which display architectural aspects of Byzantine, Venetian and British styles.

Step inside the fortress to discover an interesting collection of monuments. Among these are the ruins of a former British hospital and of a Roman temple. Don’t miss St. George’s Church, built by the British military in 1840. The church’s colonnaded entrance resembles an ancient Greek temple. Visit the small museum with displays of Byzantine sculptures and paintings.

When visiting the fortress, be sure to climb the staircases to the top of the battlements. From here, you can enjoy views of Corfu’s coastline and the cityscape of Corfu Town. Spot major attractions such as Liston Promenade, Spianada Square and the New Fortress.

Located in the northeast corner of Corfu Town, the Old Fortress is just a short walk from both the heart of the historic Old Town and the Port of Corfu. Parking is available on the streets outside the fortress’ main entrance and around Spianada Square.

The Old Fortress is open daily and there is an admission fee. Visit during the summer months when local and international musicians perform regular concerts. Ask at the fortress’ entrance for details.

The combined ticket for 5 museums is very good value. While you're here, do have a drink at the Corfu Sailing Club bar which is down some steps at the back, and overlooks the small ships and the island of Vidos.
