Ogunquit

This friendly seaside town in York County, Maine, is a popular destination for gallery visitors, beachcombers, history buffs and shoppers.

Legend sys the Abenaki tribe gave Ogunquit its name because the word means “beautiful place by the sea.” See how this quaint seaside town in southern Maine certainly lives up to its name. Between sandy beaches, a charming town center and stunning scenery, Ogunquit offers a wonderful variety of activities.

Take advantage of Ogunquit’s seaside location at Ogunquit Beach. This 3.5-mile (5.6-kilometer) beach along the Atlantic Ocean is a popular destination for swimming, sunbathing, shell collecting and bird watching.

No trip to Ogunquit is complete without visiting Perkins Cove, a charming fishing community just south of the town center. Watch boats go in and out of the harbor and observe its hand-operated footbridge in operation.

Go for a scenic stroll along Marginal Way. The 1-mile (2-kilometer) walking path snakes along the coast between Perkins Cove and Ogunquit Beach. Admire views of the out-of-use Marginal Way Lighthouse and try to spot piping plovers nesting in the dunes near the beach.

Step back in time at Ogunquit Memorial Library. The fieldstone building, complete with a turret and arched entrance, looks like something out of a fairy tale. Inside, discover books and curios including an antique grandfather clock and an array of historic paintings.

Ogunquit Museum of American Art is dedicated exclusively to American modern art. Study works by Maine artists including Eliot O’Hara, Carl Waters and Henry Strater. Outside, walk through the oceanfront sculpture garden.

The town center is a lively place any time of year. Enjoy locally caught seafood at one of its many restaurants. Stay in a charming inn or a luxurious spa resort. Browse a variety of shops and galleries. See a show at the Ogunquit Playhouse, with top Broadway performances and original productions.

Ogunquit is a very pedestrian-friendly town and can be easily explored on foot. For a more unique experience, hop aboard the vintage Oqunquit Trolley, which makes stops throughout town and at the beach.

A great four days in Ogunquit, Maine
"We were greeted by a great receptionist. When we got to our room there were two problems: a LED light bulb needed to be replaced since it flickered badly; the toilet kept running due to the need to replace the flapper. These items were fixed by 10:30 AM the next day. Also there was quite a lip between ..."

Fantastic beach, plenty of nice dining places and boutique shops. On the expensive side but well worth a visit.
