Whether you travel to Nilsiä in the summer or winter, the number one attraction is Tahko.
Tahko is renowned as a winter destination – its ski resort is the third largest in Finland. There are 24 slopes with an elevation difference of up to 200 metres. Tahko also provides everything from equipment rental to ski schools and children's slopes, fun parks, sledging runs, rotary sleds, cross-country skiing tracks, snowmobiles, ice road races, saunas and much more. Finish with a dip in the warm waters of Tahko's own spa or one of the other spas nearby.
The area offers horse riding, an indoor sports centre, a shooting range, geocaching, quad safaris, ten-pin bowling, two golf courses, a domestic animal park for children and much more besides. In the summer, visitors can go fishing, boating, canoeing and swimming in Lake Syvärinjärvi.
For accommodation, head to one of the hotels, holiday apartments or rental cottages in the area. Tahko also has a campsite. Private rental cottages and countryside accommodation can be found elsewhere in Nilsiä.
Tahko is by no means Nilsiä’s only hill: the Pisanmäki and Kinahmi hills rise up around it. The landscapes of lakes and hills in the Pisa nature conservation area can be admired from the Pisanmäki observation tower.
Aholansaari island was the home of Paavo Ruotsalainen, the 19th century leader of the awakening, a religious movement. The island houses Ruotsalainen's smoke house museum, main building and exhibition space, nature trail, beach, lunchtime restaurant and small shop. In the winter, the island can be reached by ice road, conditions permitting.
Nilsiä's local heritage centre contains a museum presenting local history, a granary, a café and a summer theatre. It hosts a varied programme of events, including workshops on traditional themes for children.
Nilsiä has a magnificent stone-built church from 1905 in a style combining neogothic and national romantic influences. The stone is quartzite quarried from Tahkovuori hill.
The centre of Nilsiä is lively and idyllic, particularly in the summer, when the little boutiques open their doors and the summer market is buzzing.
Combine an active holiday, a beautiful countryside idyll and interesting heritage attractions on your holiday in Nilsiä.
