The National Museum of Military History contains an unrivaled collection of military artifacts displayed in spacious indoor and outdoor exhibition areas. Stroll around the museum’s estate and see expertly preserved tanks, aircraft and other vehicles. Indoors you’ll find magnificent displays of weaponry, uniforms, flags, artworks, photographs and archives. With a collection that began 1916 and includes over a million military-related items, the museum contains Bulgaria’s most extensive range of military displays.
Enter the three-story museum and begin your exploration of the fascinating displays. From the time of the Thracians to the present day, the museum has items spanning centuries of momentous military action. Check out the displays dedicated to the 1876 April Uprising and see rebel flags and weaponry displayed in cases. See Bulgarian uniforms that were used in World War I and some of the personal effects belonging to soldiers. Admire beautifully restored decorations and cavalry. The museum also has a comprehensive collection of photographs, archives and significant documents. With detailed explanations in English, you’ll get an intriguing insight into Bulgaria’s role in many historic battles.
Experience the atmosphere of the different military periods by listening to the music played in different exhibition rooms. You might hear the sound of rushing river water or the chanting and cheering of soldiers. Listen to the military national anthem and hear recordings of World War II bombings.
The museum also contains a rotating selection of temporary and touring exhibitions. Check the museum’s program of educational events and workshops. There is a dedicated Children’s Museum that helps youngsters learn about the museum’s historical collections.
Be sure to save some time for the outdoor exhibit. This spacious park contains dozens of battle vehicles, including German tanks and aircraft. You can see up to 230 outdoor exhibits of military artillery, marine equipment and aviation paraphernalia. Check out the museum’s displays of missiles and missile launchers.
The National Museum of Military History is located near the military academy. It is easily accessible by local tram and bus. Admission is free for children up to 7 years of age, and discounts are available for students, military and families. Guided tours are available in English for a fee.
