The National Museum of Denmark is the largest collection of cultural history in the country. The fascinating exhibits chronicle 14,000 years of heritage, from the reindeer hunters of the Ice Age to the German occupation of the Second World War.
Starting on the ground floor, follow a chronological trail through the ancient history of Denmark to discover what life was like for Bronze and Stone Age man. See a skeleton of a young girl from 1370 BC and learn about the earliest Mesolithic hunters. Admire priceless artifacts from the Middle Ages, including religious objects, weapons and jewellery, before learning about the sweeping social and cultural changes that took place during the Renaissance, when Denmark’s great Kings Frederik II and Christian IV were on the throne.
The story continues through the political turmoil of the 1800s to the dark days of German occupation and up to modern times, with examples of iconic clothing, furniture and art from the 1950s onwards.
One of the major highlights of the museum is the Viking exhibit, which charts the rise of maritime exploration and the arrival of Christianity, marking the true beginnings of present-day Denmark. The Vikings were the most powerful force on the seas of continental Europe, setting sail in huge ships to conquer new lands and establish lucrative trading links. See how the Vikings lived and learn more about this hugely influential period in Danish history.
All the information in the museum is provided in English and Danish, so it’s easy to navigate the displays, and guided tours are also available. There are plenty of interactive displays for young hands to explore, so make sure to bring the kids along too.
The National Museum of Denmark is located in the city centre and is easily reached on foot from all directions. There is free bike parking outside and paid car parking on the street. Central Station is a short walk away. The museum is closed on Mondays and admission is free.
