Museum of the Augustins

Museum of the Augustins featuring a park and heritage elements

One of the oldest museums in France, this institution is a fantastic place to see paintings, sculptures and architecture spanning centuries, back to the Middle Ages.

Dating back to the end of the 18th century, the Museum of the Augustins and its works survived the tumultuous French Revolution. This fine art museum has a comprehensive collection of paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages up to the 1900s, with a focus on Romanesque pieces. Learn about the Occitan region’s culture and history through the many works of art.

Admire the arches of the redbrick building that was reconstructed in the 19th century, having initially been built in the 1300s. Enter the museum and begin browsing some of the thousands of works. Explore the church that lies within the complex and admire the intricate organ built by famous German manufacturer Jürgen Ahrend.

Inspect the array of paintings of the iconic French schools from the 15th to 18th centuries. These include pieces by Jacques Stella, Valentin de Boulogne and Pierre Mignard. See the masterpieces by artists from the region of Toulouse, including François de Troy and Nicolas Tournier. Take the audio tour for a more comprehensive understanding of the museum and its works.

Admire the 12th-century Romanesque sculptures recovered from the Notre-Dame de la Daurade, the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne and the Basilique Saint-Sernin. Examine the eight 16th-century terracotta figures among the many medieval statues and busts.

Enjoy the serenity in the grassy central courtyard full of plants, trees and floral arrangements. Relax on one of the chairs here and watch people go by.

The museum opens daily Wednesday through Monday from morning until early evening. It stays open until late on Wednesdays. There is a fee to enter the complex. Those under 18 get free entry. You can also enter for free on the first Sunday of each month.

The Museum of the Augustins is in the central part of the downtown district of Toulouse. Ride the metro system to the Esquirol stop and walk east for a few minutes to arrive at the museum. See nearby attractions, including the David Léger Sculpture Studio, the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne and the Museum of Old Toulouse.
