When you visit the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha, look for geometric patterns in the architecture and in the treasures making up its far-ranging collections. Colorful ceramics, glass, jewelry, metalwork and textiles show the excellent artistry and craftsmanship in pieces created for princes, caliphs and emperors as well as common people of the Middle East and beyond. Manuscripts include beautifully illustrated Qur’ans from the 7th to the 19th century as well as writings in science and literature.
Take photos, without flash, of the stunning artworks and interior decoration. Start your visit in the second floor’s introductory section and permanent exhibits related to science, patterns, calligraphy and figures in art. Move to the third floor for regional art selections from Turkey, Iran, India, Egypt, Syria and Central Asia. Check for special exhibitions on the first and fourth floors. Join a lecture or workshop covering subjects such as Islamic art and calligraphy.
Find the museum along Doha’s waterfront, La Corniche. Bring the family to enjoy other elements of this waterfront setting. The MIA Park is a large green space, perfect for a relaxing stroll while admiring the city skyline across the water. Set kids free in playgrounds designed for a range of age groups. Bikes and bungee trampolines are available.
Walk along the semi-circular promenade to admire views of the museum from all angles reflecting in the water of the bay. At the end of the pier is artist Richard Serra’s tall tower, a steel sculpture called 7.
Travel to the museum by taxi from Hamad International Airportin about 15 minutes or walk from Souq Waqif in about 20 minutes. Hours for the museum are from mid morning to early evening every day except Friday when it is open only in the afternoon. Buy tickets for admission at the museum. Join one of the free guided tours with different themes on different days. Access to MIA Park is free.
