Maintained by the University of Münster, the Münster Botanical Garden is a stunning leafy haven beside the Prince Bishop’s Castle. It was founded at the beginning of the 19th century and has an array of greenhouses containing flora from exotic parts of the globe. Visit Münster Botanical Garden with family or friends to stroll along the banks of the stream, appreciating the serenity in this 11-acre (4.6-hectare) garden.
Set up a picnic by the lake and enjoy snacks and drinks with a picturesque backdrop. The water is encircled by a wall of tall trees that look particularly colorful in fall. Stop at the orangery and stroll between its potted trees. The structure was crafted from the remains of the park’s palace terrace. Wander past the vegetables and herbs in the Cottage Garden and see the birch and oak trees in the arboretum.
As you make your way around the park, stop to examine some of the 8,000 varieties of plants. You’ll find alpine vegetation beside many species from moor and heath terrains. Enter some of the six greenhouses and study the tropical plant displays. Sit at one of the benches and watch people go by in this green oasis.
Rest at one of several cafés or have a meal at a restaurant near the park. Marvel at the preserved façade of the majestic castle, which was constructed in the late 1700s. The site opens daily and is free to enter. The palace and gardens were severely damaged in World War II and were reconstructed in the 20th century.
The Münster Botanical Gardens is located just outside the western limits of the Old Town or Altstadt quarter. Travel by bus to one of the stops on the streets that surround the park.
