Surround yourself with art produced by established masters and lesser-known local talents at one of Alabama’s most celebrated galleries.

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts celebrates diversity in painting, sculpture and photography and offers a vast and varied selection of artworks for visitors to explore. Permanent collections focus on the work of American artists and are complemented by rotating temporary exhibits, which bring different themes and ideas to the museum. The charming setting in a green park beside a lake adds to the museum’s appeal. Linger here for hours to enjoy art and nature.

Examine the masterpieces on display from the permanent collections. The museum focuses on American artists and displays work by Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol and others. The gallery also shines a spotlight on local artists from the southeastern U.S.

Check to see if any temporary exhibits are being hosted here during you visit. From impressionist watercolors to contemporary photography, the museum curates visiting collections with a diversity of media, themes and eras.

Learn more about different aspects of art at one of the events held in the museum throughout the year. Previous events have included a Native American Family Day and stained-glass workshops. Ask about classes held for children.

Visit on the first Sunday of every month for free tours of the galleries. During the tours, which begin in the early afternoon, knowledgeable docents guide visitors around the exhibits. After appreciating and absorbing the art, rest in the café or pick up souvenirs in the museum store.

The museum, founded in 1930, is one of the oldest of its kind in the state. It moved into its current location in 1988 after a coordinated community effort to create the new facility, where it continues to grow. Stroll around the surrounding Blount Cultural Park, which features several ponds, walking trails and statues. The park is also the setting for Alabama’s annual Shakespeare festival.

Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is about a 15-minute drive east of the Capitol building. Free on-site parking is available and entrance to the museum is also free. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, with closures on national holidays.
