Montgenèvre is a French commune situated in the Hautes-Alpes department, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The construction of the resort, in 1907, was marked by the first international ski jumping competition, which was a phenomenal success. It then became an essential gathering place for high society and became world-famous.
The ski resort of Montgenèvre is part of the French-Italian Via Lattea skiing area, which is made up of several resorts and includes a total of 250 miles of pistes and 91 ski lifts. Beginners and experts alike will be spoilt for choice by the quality of snowfall, the exceptional views and the wealth of activities and entertainment on offer.
There's also plenty to do the summer in Montgenèvre, with major events such as the Sky Race, a legendary race from the Cerces aux Écrins massif, and the French mountain biking championships. A wide range of activities is available over the summer months, including golf, hiking, horse riding and summer tobogganing.
Take time to walk around the picturesque village, which is a stopping point for numerous pilgrimages, including the Camino de Santiago. This sacred aspect can be seen in Montgenèvre's religious heritage, such as the Chapelle Sainte-Anne, the Église Saint-Maurice and the Chapelle Notre-Dame des Sept Douleurs. You also shouldn't miss the Napoleon Obelisk, which was erected in honour of the emperor to celebrate the end of the construction of Montgenèvre's road.
To reach the village, you can take the high-speed train from Paris, Lyon and Chambéry, arriving in Oulx in Italy, followed by a coach connection to Montgenèvre coach station. The nearest airport would be Turin, also in Italy, which is served by direct flights from London. In winter, a free shuttle service operates between the ski resorts, making it easy to get around and to find services and shops.
Whatever the season, Montgenèvre is a paradise for outdoor sports lovers.
